present Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti

Leonard Bernstein’s charming one-act satiric opera is about a suburban couple in a troubled marriage. The opera is written in seven scenes. Opera Theatre of the Rockies is proud to kick off its 20th Anniversary Spring Season by joining Theatreworks to present a jazzy work by Leonard Bernstein, as part of Leonard Bernstein at 100, the Best of All Possible Worlds Festival in Colorado Springs. Set in the 1950s, Trouble in Tahiti is both funny, light-hearted and serious. The score reflects the jazz style of the 1950s, complete with a jazz trio that sings in close harmony, appearing now and then to provide commentary to what is going on in the story. At times, the music is tense and tightly syncopated while other moments are lyrical and quite beautiful – juxtaposed just as the audience sees how the couple experience a life of newfound freedom versus an imagined reality.
Bernstein, well-known for his contributions to American musical theatre with such famous works as “On the Town,” “Candide” and “West Side Story” was also a prolific writer of film scores, ballets and orchestral music. He actually wrote “Trouble in Tahiti” while on his honeymoon in 1951, and it is the only work for which he wrote both music and lyrics.
“Trouble in Tahiti” is the 35th unique opera production presented by Opera Theatre of the Rockies during its 20 year history in Colorado Springs. Artistic director and founder Martile Rowland is proud to collaborate with Theatreworks to bring this production to Chapman Foundations Recital Hall at the Ent Center for the Arts – the very first opera to be offered in the fabulous new center. The talented cast includes artists Valerie Nicolosi, Bradley Thompson as Dinah and Sam respectively, and George Preston, Stephanie Brink and UCCS’ own Solveig Olsen as the jazz trio. Ms. Rowland is stage directing with Daniel Brink, Opera Theatre’s Music Director at the piano.
Tickets start at $27.50 and are currently on sale at the UCCS Presents Box Office at 719-255-3232 or online at theatreworkscs.org.
