Pikes Peak Opera LeagueThe Pikes Peak Opera League was founded in 2001 as a continuation of the Colorado Opera Festival Guild, created in 1979. The League formally became associated with Opera Theatre of the Rockies in. 2003. The League supports the activities of several organizations that promote the art form of opera in the Pikes Peak Region. Opera Theatre Goes to School, a program of Opera Theatre of the Rockies, has flourished in area schools, involving more than 950 teachers and more than 48,000 young school children so far. Each year, teachers from more than ten school districts participate in an accredited course to learn more about opera and receive classroom study guides to present opera within their classroom curriculum. Martile Rowland, Founder/Artistic Director of Opera Theatre along with featured lead singers, present in-school opera preview performances for the students. The course ends with teachers bringing more than 1400 students to a live student performance of a fully-staged opera production at the Pikes Peak Center in Colorado Springs. The Pikes Peak Opera League provides major support for all of Opera Theatre of the Rockies’ efforts to create an opera-friendly environment for Colorado Springs and surrounding communities. Thus, It is the hope of both organizations that through the years, there is a substantial growth in building diverse opera audiences across southern Colorado.
